You Can’t Use Up Creativity: By Joy Huber

Creativity is a funny thing. Somedays it seems to be a whisper in the wind, just out of reach and yet still pulling on my soul, and other days it seems to be a canary on my shoulder with a constant song and the beauty flows effortlessly. I truly believe creativity is such a powerful energy and it can plug into us at anytime, almost an energy of its own, outside of us, but it’s always there.
Even on the days when things aren’t flowing as easily, creativity is there, just hiding maybe for a moment. I wonder if in those moments it’s our test to go within. Are these the moments when we need to pause and take a step back to reflect and reset our direction? Sometimes it seems like creativity is like an animal. It can sense fear and negative energy and it’s in those moments that it unplugs from us so that we can reset and allow the creativity to flow again.
One of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou helps to give perspective in times when creativity seems to slip away…
“You can’t use up creativity, creative thinking builds on itself and increases the creativity of the thinker… You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

This lesson can be applied to so much more than just creativity. Truly, the more you use, the more you give, the more you share, the more there is for all of us. Just because something like creativity slips away for a moment doesn’t mean it will not return. Living and practicing an abundance mindset in a society filled with messages of lack can be hard but when we hold back from exploring and sharing our gifts we are taking from the world a gift we were meant to share.

A lot of things can make us hold back… fear, shame, comparison… but what you feed lives and what you don’t feed falls quiet. So in moments when it seems like creativity falls quiet, take a moment to pause and go within. Monitor your thoughts and reset. It’s a constant effort and practice in self awareness but sharing our gifts is worth the work. The world needs creativity to flow through every voice.
